History
Jurong is probably derived from the Malay word jerung, which means a "shark". Jurong Road was cut around 1852-1853, during the time of John Thomson's tenure as Chief Surveyor. Many roads within the Jurong Industrial Estate named in the late 1960s and early 1970s drew inspiration from the nature of industrial activities in the estate and related aspects of industrialisation.

For the local Chinese population, Jurong was formerly called peng kang, a reference to a gambier plantation located in the area. After 1906, rubber plantations dominated the area — Bulim Estate, Lokyang Estate, Chong Keng Estate, Seng Toh Estate and Yunnan Estate, giving rise to many of the local names for areas in Jurong. Jurong was also once called "Goh's Folly", as some Singaporeans doubted the success of Dr Goh Keng Swee's plan to develop the area..

Present
Today, Jurong East is a town in the west region of Singapore. The town covers an area of 3.8 km² and is managed by the South West Community Development Council. The town is accessible via public transport serviced by the Jurong East MRT Station and the Jurong East Bus Interchange.

Amenities
The Jurong Regional Library, a public library located in the central, serves the residents and students in Jurong East. The Science Centre, Singapore, a family-oriented attraction in Jurong East, is located within walking distance from the central. The other nearby tourist sites include the Chinese Garden, Teban Gardens, Pandan Gardens, Pandan Reservoir and Japanese Garden. The IMM Shopping Mall, which contains a Giant Hypermarket, gets a great deal of traffic during weekends. Another shopping centre in Jurong East is Jurong Entertainment Centre which is noted to have an indoor ice skating rink. An International Business Park (IBP) is also located in Jurong East. Companies and corporations such as Creative, Johnson & Johnson and JTC Corporation are represented at the business park.

A new Jurong General Hospital, which would be located within walking distance from the Jurong East MRT Station, was to be open by 2015. This development will form part of the larger Jurong Lake District plan to transform the Jurong East area into a mini-city with commercial, leisure and other amenities.

Plans for future development
Jurong East, together with Jurong Lake, will be developed into the biggest lakeside destination for business and leisure in the West Region. The two areas will be known as the new Jurong Lake District. Centrally located in the West Region, which houses a quarter of Singapore's population of 4.2 million, the 360 ha Jurong Lake District is well connected to the CBD (about 20 minutes), Tuas Second Link and rest of the island. It also has ready access to a large talent and labour pool. The nearby Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estates support global businesses ranging from biotechnology to pharmaceutical and chemical industries. There are more than 3,000 MNCs and SMEs operating in these areas.
