Jurong West is a neighbourhood in Singapore, and is west of its counterpart Jurong East, covering a much larger area of some 9.90 square kilometres with slightly more than half used for residential purposes and HDB housing, including the Jurong West Extension. It is part of the larger town of Jurong. It covers an area bounded by the Pan Island Expressway, Upper Jurong Road, Boon Lay Way and Jurong Lake. Jurong West is served by Lakeside & Boon Lay MRT stations, and by Boon Lay Bus Interchange

History

Jurong West was mainly dominated by swamps with low hills covered by shrubs and a thick jungle in the 1950s. It was developed into an industrial estate in the 1960s, supported by low-cost housing. Amenities such as government dispensaries, a private hospital, creches, hawker centres and banks were built in the 1970s during efforts to encourage workers to live in the Jurong Town and at the same time, to develop Singapore economically. Boon Lay & Pioneer Area forms part of the Jurong Industrial Estate which is the industrial heartland of Singapore. From a swampy jungle which many had called a "lost region" in the early 1960s, the Boon Lay & Pioneer Area has been transformed into a bustling industrial centre

Present
Today, Jurong West is a bustling town dotted with students from NTU, workers from the Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estate, army guys from nearby Army camps, and residents of the Jurong West Town. The Boon Lay Bus Interchange will also be rebuilt to a integrated aircon bus interchange known as the Boon Lay Bus Interchange (Transport Hub). This public transport hub will be integrated with the largest mall in the west, Jurong Point and a newly built condominium The Centris.

Amenities
Amenities in Jurong West include Jurong Point Shopping Centre, the Jurong West Sport Complex and Recreation Centre, the Nanyang Techonological University (NTU).

Plans for future development
Jurong East, together with Jurong Lake, will be developed into the biggest lakeside destination for business and leisure in the West Region. The two areas will be known as the new Jurong Lake District. Centrally located in the West Region, which houses a quarter of Singapore's population of 4.2 million, the 360 ha Jurong Lake District is well connected to the CBD (about 20 minutes), Tuas Second Link and rest of the island. It also has ready access to a large talent and labour pool. The nearby Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estates support global businesses ranging from biotechnology to pharmaceutical and chemical industries. There are more than 3,000 MNCs and SMEs operating in these areas.

The Jurong Lake District will feature two distinct precincts: a vibrant commercial area (Jurong Gateway) and a waterfront leisure destination (Lakeside)
